Imagine the University of Oregon as the institution where students thrive in the seamless integration of academic, social, and cultural discovery. Where faculty and staff have a common sense of purpose to further the UO's commitment to academic excellence both in and outside the classroom. Where high quality living spaces, learning facilities, and out-of-classroom opportunities reflect a commitment to the free exchange of ideas, multiculturalism, and active learning.

Erb memorial union & Student rec center

Oregon 2020 envisions state-of-the-art student union and recreation facilities in the heart of campus that will define on-campus student life, and pay dividends in increased recruitment and retention of students. To achieve this vision, we retained the services of nationally recognized facility consultants, Brailsford & Dunlavey (B&D), to assist us.

The ten-month campus consultation led by B&D was completed in December 2010. Results of the fall “valuing” survey demonstrated broad support for renovation of the EMU and SRC. Almost 8,000 surveys were completed fall term. 79% of students and 82% of faculty responded that they were somewhat likely or very likely to support expansion of facilities.

B&D’s final report establishes a conceptual program of spaces for each project, as well as construction and operational budgets. Total project cost for construction is $196 million, $61 million to complete the Student Rec Center and $135 million to complete the Erb Memorial Union.

User groups representing students, faculty, and staff have been appointed to work with selected architects to design the new EMU and expanded SRC. Architect selection is scheduled for late spring term, and building design will begin in earnest fall 2011.

Alternative Breaks

Alternative Breaks are substance free, community service learning trips that take place during the UO’s traditional winter, spring and summer breaks. Participants travel in teams to different cities locally, nationally, and internationally where they engage in active service and have the opportunity to gain new perspectives on social issues. Each trip also supports unique student training, learning and reflection aimed at enhancing a participant's sense of self and understanding of community while developing core leadership skills.

This year students traveled to rural Oregon, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. Each team put together a presentation of both stories and pictures of their experiences, which they shared with the campus community on April 5th.

For more information on the Alternative Break Program, visit the Service Learning Program website.
